Ranked Number 2

...so Milton 5.0 is ranked number two in Google for a search for "sex slave comic" - not sure if this was my intention of ruling the world with Milton - I was hoping for "online comic strip" or some-such - but hey, I'll take what I can get. Test it out for yourself.

Long Beach Pro Surfing

CJ Hobgood (2001 ASP World Champion) at the professional surfing event on Long Beach, NY

Kelly Slater - Long Beach, NY 2011

I went to the ASP professional surfing event at Long Beach, NY.  I suppose in all sporting events you (meaning the crowd) are part of the event - but in this case it's something a little extra as the athletes walk right through the crowd to compete as the bottom photo shows.  That's Kelly Slater - he's the 10x world champion - I've never been to a professional golfing event - maybe it's the same - but I don't think any other sport let's fans come within 50 feet of an athlete when they aren't on the field/rink/whatever.  I really like the top photo as I was using my camera phone which has about a 1 sec delay from the time I hit the button and the photo gets taken - so I was ready to get a shot, hit the button, and then the commentators announce that he (CJ Hobgood) had just won the heat, then the camera clicked.

It was a great feeling to watch this event and be right there.  I never really followed professional surfing to any great extent when I was younger - but I knew who the top guys were (Tom Curren, Cheyne Horan, et al). The surfing industry likes to create myth and legend out of the surfers and as kids we all fell under it.  Going out and watching the top surfer of today I have a little more perspective - pretty much that these are just people - but it was nice to be swept up a bit in nostalgia for my own youth and the impressionable state you are in when younger.  But I was left with more than just fond memories of youth - I was inspired by what I saw today - canceling out all the publicity myth building BS - these people have worked extremely hard to get to where they are today.  Anyone has to appreciate that. Plus I got to see some great surfing.

See a few more shots here - I don't have any photos of the waves as the phone camera really doesn't shot at a distance.

Sketch Book

Milton 5.0 online comic strip by Tim Thayer
Today I sat down to finish a strip - final brush and ink over pencil - but my hand was shaking a little.  It had been a few days since I'd inked anything in and sometimes being out of practice causes this...but this was a little more - maybe just low blood sugar?  Anyway, I had to abandon the finish work and just worked in the sketch book - going over some older stuff in the book with the pen and ink I already had out.  I've been interested in using a "freer" line and so this seemed like a good time to experiment a little. I'm not ready to jump in and redo all the strips I have - but I could see using a looser line as the strip progressed.  Charles Schulz after having heart surgery was left with a shaky hand - I'd assume at first this must have been devastating to him - but of course he continued Peanuts and this, although not entirely intentional, shaky hand gave him a new expressive line for the strip - improving it that much more.  In my case, I probably just need to eat a bagel - but at least it gave me a chance to test out the looser line.

Best,
TT

Babel Fish Neil Young

I've had a good time with the translation service Babel Fish.  I like to start in English and translate to another language and then translate that back to English...below is Neil Young's Old Man - English to Spanish to English again:

Watched of the old man in my life,
I' m much as you were.
Watched of the old man in my life,
I' m much as you were.

Watched of the old man in my life,
Twenty-four and there' alive
so much more in a paradise
That only does that it thinks of two.

The love lost, such cost,
Give me the things that don' t obtains lost.
Like a currency that won' t secures the shaken wheel to him to house.

The old done man a glance my I' life;
m has taste of you much
I need somebody to love
the complete day to me
Ah traverse, a glance in my eyes
and you can say that' s truth.

Film No. 1 - Summer

New film by me. Mostly footage from the Summer - finally put together and edited this week. I'm using a Flip camera and Power Director 8 for editing. I'm planning a series of these movies - vignettes of interest - short scene that are visual and not narrative. Music is from MobyGratis.com (Free music for films from Moby). You can also see the film on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j7mZrZ3UG4&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

1972 Suburban

1972 Chevrolet Suburban, 67-72 Chevy trucks, GMC Suburban, 72 c20 suburban

Gratuitous shot of the Suburban from our walk on Sunday, starting in Sunnyside (Washington Irving's home) to Lyndhurst Mansion. The last weekend for so many leaves still hanging on. The truck continues to run well - on the to-do list is fix rear oil seal leak at the axle (very soon); tighten up or replace power steering gear; various oil leaks around engine (new gaskets for timing cover and oil pan). It's been a pleasure to drive - and it about as rare as a Ferrari around here - about the same gas milage too? We've seen twice a 1979 Jeep Cherokee around town. It's not like California - but even in CA the older cars are getting rarer - although I just found this blog with some fantastic stuff from Alameda - click here...

Rabbit Painting

rabbit series - smaller paintings by Tim Thayer
Start of a new series of smaller gouache and watercolor works. I'm looking at balance here - and all that might mean within a painting (balance of composition, light/dark, etc.). I find the rabbit to be an odd character/metaphor - it's symbolic sexual meaning combined with cuteness --- but I also find them a little menacing (maybe it all stems from Monty Python and the Holy Grail???). These rabbits are also have a direct connection to the introduction of Henry in Milton 5.0. And a minor connect to the Updike character. This one is available at our Etsy Shop -- 20bucks.

Milton 5.0

Milton 5.0 comic strip by Tim Thayer
Working on getting a batch of Milton 5.0 strips together to submit to the syndicates. I'm coloring a few in - I've colored other Three Feet strips, but I think this is the first Milton. I may work a bit more on the color for Milton himself. Also I've had plans for CPU's little screen to show relevant content to the strip -- got the chance to play with that too here.

Waylon Jennings

Been listening to "Wanted - The Outlaws." This is one of my top ten favorite albums. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, Tompall Glaser - if you don't know this album go and look for it - if you have this album play it again. I don't really know much of Waylon Jennings' work - but he is so superb on this album I really need to dig deeper. The above photo, while comic, is also a sad comment on his condition at certain times in his life ("...lovable losers, and no account boozers...")

1972 Suburban

Tara takes a great picture. I might be a little swayed by the subject matter - but she still takes a nice photo. (photo credit: Tara)

I've been a little obsessed lately - first looking for 1972 Suburbans online in the spring - and now looking for info on wheel sizes, neural safety switches, master cylinders. Maybe I'll be able to get back to work...maybe the fall...

Trucks

GMC pickup truck in southern Vermont
Not sure if this one is running or not - most of these trucks in this series would appear to be not running. This is southern Vermont outside of an auto repair/auto body place - all the vehicles were lined up along the corn. Been converting these truck photos to black and white - you can see why I left this one in color.

1972 Suburban

1972 Chevrolet Suburban
Well, here she is - our 1972 Chevrolet Suburban. I've owned a lot of cars over the years but this is the first Chevrolet, not to mention Suburban. It's in great shape overall - there are a few updates and additions I'll do but it drives great as is. It's about 17 1/2 feet long, and on the trip down from Keene, NH (we call her Keene Green) we got about 12 MPG - have to do some more testing for local MPGs. I'm hoping we have her for a long time to come - hoping to keep fixing her up so she's better and better. Tara said she felt this was the start of us doing things our own way -- I said "start?" For those that are interested - C20 (3/4 ton), 350 cubic inch V8 with the 350 turbo transmission, original 16.5 inch wheels, three rows of seats, rear A/C (currently not working...but should be back online soon), born in Flint Michigan.
